FOOTBALL
The Los Angeles Raiders upset the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl in 1984 and some of us may remember the famous commercial when Apple Computer introduced the Macintosh to the world. Wikipedia says, “The broadcast was notable for airing the famous "1984" television commercial, introducing the Apple Macintosh.” It featured a lady track athlete running with a large sledge hammer in her arms. She was being followed by soldiers trying to catch up to her as she runs into a large auditorium where the crowd appears to be in a trance listening to “big brother” brainwashing them via a super large video screen. The lady then launches the hammer into the screen exploding it and releasing everyone from their trance. It is one of the most awesome Super Bowl commercials ever and may still be available on the internet.
side track: I believe Apple Computer has missed a golden opportunity to promote its company and products via the lady with the sledge hammer. Apple could have made her an icon of the company always wearing her running outfit and calling her “Daughter of Thor”. Then they could have had a bi-annual “Daughter of Thor Pageant” where a new person is selected to fill the role for the company. It could be televised with a lot of entertainment and I believe would be a big hit. The Daughter of Thor would then represent the company appearing at events and in commercials world-wide on behalf of Apple Computer. The hammer could lead to a line of promotional materials for the company. I can visualize a hammer shaped selfie stick, for instance. In fact, it is not too late. Apple could re-make the commercial for a new product launch and then run with my “Daughter of Thor” idea. Okay … back to this book.
Today, much of Christianity is like a crowd in a trance or just stuck in routine and someone needs to clobber it with a sledgehammer - in a loving way, of course. ““Mentors must learn to use “velvet sledgehammers …””3 My prayer is that this book will help move many of us Christians out of our routine and get us moving forward with our Christian faith and actions, becoming Disciples and Effective & Enduring Leaders™, and fulfilling God's purposes for our lives.

“The call to be a shepherd (or Effective & Enduring Leader) is as important and significant as any other call found in God's Word, whether to serve as priest or prophet, king or fisher of men. It also brings us full circle back to Jesus as the ultimate model for leadership...”10 says Theodore Mistra, author of The Shepherd and His Staff. Mistra's example of Jesus as “the ultimate model for leadership” along with Jesus' purpose to create His legacy in an effective and enduring Christian church brings us to the title of this book, Effective & Enduring Leadership™ ... Visions of Greatness!
