The Ten Commandments & Effective & Enduring Leadership™ 2.2
I know that I have broken every one of the Ten Commandments more than once. Due to the grace of God through Jesus Christ, I'm still going to spend eternity in Heaven.
“The Ten Commandments, the heart of God's law, are just as applicable today as they were 3,000 years ago because they proclaim a lifestyle endorsed by God.”13
My study Bible discusses the moral law of God, “This sort of law is the direct command of God—for example, the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17). It requires strict obedience. It reveals the nature and will of God, and it still applies to us today. We are to obey this moral law, not to obtain salvation, but to live in ways pleasing to God.”13
Technically, when Jesus died on the cross, we no longer were bound by the Mosaic law that God gave to the Israelites. Jesus was the fulfillment of the Mosaic law. However, New Testament scripture are clear that God and Jesus do expect obedience of the Ten Commandments even if not in their original form. Galatians 3:23-25 verifies that we are no longer bound by the law but we are now justified by our faith in Jesus Christ, “Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.”
However Jesus, in Matthew 19:16-17, reiterates that we are expected to keep God's Commandments, ““Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”” and in Luke 10:25-28 Jesus again affirms the law, ““On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.””
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOUND IN EXODUS 20 AND DEUTERONOMY 5
“You shall have no other gods before me.
In Matthew 4:10 Jesus very strongly confirms the first Commandment, “Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
